“The Trick and the Trickmaker: How about now, environmentalists? Jorma Vulli made love to a dying burbot.”
Mr. Vulli was a familiar figure on the pages of mid-70s Ratto for his daring escapades such as this, which also included sitting in an piss-ants’ nest and drinking his urine and eating his own feces, all dutifully reported by Ratto, with full series of colour photographs.

“The Trick and The Trickmaker: He creates art without hands… This man could be the sensation of Christmas card market! Antero Korpela is one of those artists who create art without their hands. Finnish people, in tune with the spirit of Christmas, have always rushed to buy Christmas cards made without hands. The disabled artists who hold the brush in their mouths or in between their toes have gained from people the support they rightfully deserve. But Antero Korpela doesn’t paint even with his mouth or toes. With what then? Text: Timo Teerioksa. Photography: Ossi Suonperä.”

“The Trick and the Trickmaker: He farts flames! Kaarlo Virtanen has received in his genes peculiarly forceful farts. However, he didn’t destroy his life because of those powerful blows like his uncle Valdemar did. Kaarlo developed for himself out of that inherited flatulence an excellent and rare hobby. He farts flames. It’s his party trick. Text: Arto Koli. Photography: Taisto Koskela.”

Ratto magazine was especially notorious for this sort of “journalism”. A headline off Ratto, mid-1970s: “A morning of Alpo Niiranen — they had painted his balls and pissed to his mouth!”

“Around The World in 80 Beds. Bed 1: West Germany. Timo Toivonen travels the globe. In this series of writings he takes Ratto’s readers to some most peculiar beds on different corners of the world. His first target is Berlin, where he spent a night under a genuine war-era swastika flag! Photography: Eric Wilkins.”
